Granite City Park District was our last CEO business visit as students listened to Director Dave Williams share the history of the park. Dave has been the director for 18 years and employs 12 full time people and 250 part-time and seasonal employees. The district consists of 14 parks, 2 recreational centers and a golf course. The first park built was Memorial Park, across from the Gateway Regional Hospital on Madison Avenue. Dave talked about writing grants to obtain funds for special projects and trying to break even in all programs and facilities. Think of each facility as a small business. They sell products and market their products. Justin Brinkmeyer, Facilities Supervisor, is in charge of the ice rink, the swimming pool and concessions. The swimming pool is 26 years old and is undergoing significant renovations to eliminate the tile on the walls. Students enjoyed their walk through the park, learning the history and the operations of the park district.
