On Monday we met with Karen Millsap. We started the meet by discussing different social media. Social media is a great tool for new and old businesses. It is a way to advertise your product to the world. We then talked about a lesser known platform to the general public, LinkedIn; a website where you can begin networking and easily find connections. This platform will be a great help to us as we meet with other businesses in the near future.

We then discussed elevator speeches. These are important to form connections in 30 seconds or less. There are 4 types of these speeches; reception, meeting, new hire and non work.

We then briefly mentioned business cards. Mrs. Millsap said it is important to have multiple cards with different information because there is information that you might not want to give to some, but are necessary to give to others.

Sticking to the theme of networking and putting your name out there, we moved on to looking for jobs, writing applications and interviews. She first listed websites for finding jobs. This will be useful for us in the future for many reasons. If we run a business and need employees, we have websites to put our name out. It would also be helpful if you are looking for a job.

Next, she explained the importance of interviews. The interviewer will receive information about the interviewee including dedication to their work and behavior. The interviewee will also get more information regarding the business they are being interviewed for.

Last we discussed red flags and green flags of an interview/application. Red flags included: frequent job changes, misspelled words, poor grammar and late arrivals. These factors should be noted for they can be due to an uncaring attitude. Some green flags include: key job requirements, work experience and applications showing accomplishments. These factors should also be noted for they can be due to a caring attitude.

This meeting was very helpful to both my peers and I. I hope we can meet with her again in the near future.
